Description
Elevated to titular Bishop of Sanavo and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, the Most Rev. Joseph T. McGucken, a native son of this city, is shown knealing in center at St. Vibiana's Cathedral during a solemn ceremony. Archbishop John J. Cantwell, wearing a skull cap and rich gold vestments, who officiated at the rites which made Monsignor McGucken a member of the episcopacy. Attending the ceremony are visiting members of the hierarchy. McGucken, a priest and auxiliary bishop for many years in Los Angeles, went on to serve as the fifth Archbishop of San Francisco from 1962 to 1977. Photo dated: March 19, 1941.
