View of early Los Angeles, California, from Fort Moore Hill (also known as Fort Hill), looking north, showing Bellevue Avenue (later Sunset Boulevard) in foreground and the large J. W. Robinson mansion at center, on the street just north of Sunset Boulevard. Part of the Plaza section of Los Angeles (also called Sonora Town) can be seen down the hill at right. Title transcribed from item. "45 from Bellevue Ave. looking south"--text, on item. "Gardens of Los Angeles and vicinity in midwinter Pierce & Blanchard 569 N. Main St. Los Angeles, California"--text, printed on item. Description from notes on this photograph by donor Ernest Marquez in Box 94, folder 10_12, of collection. Date devised on active years for photographer imprint "Pierce & Blanchard." (Charles C. Pierce and James B. Blanchard). Pierce came to California in 1886 and began his photographic career in Los Angeles, first in partnership with Albert H. Lohn, and then successively with J.B. Blanchard and A.E. McConnell. He established his own studio around 1900. (See C.C. Pierce negative collection, photCL 464.) Blanchard operated as J. B. Blanchard & Company at this same address, 569 North Main, in 1890, so this photograph was likely made before that. (Mautz, C. Bio. of Western photographers, 1997.)
