Description
Photograph caption date stamped August 8, 1955 reads, "In the third annual age group Junior Olympics swimming championships sponsored by the Valley Times at Glendale Swimming School Saturday and yesterday records fell in every direction. From the left: Coach Kris Kristenson, watch in hand, congratulates Johnny Jurgenson on winning the boys' 15-16 100-yard free style; Patty Kempner, in pool, is congratulated by Bobby Bennett, a double winner; Kenneth Merton of the Encino Swim Club proudly holds gold medal and certificate after winning the 50-yard breaststroke in Junior Olympic record time; Jerry Lipman, unattached, a triple winner, smiles broadly at collecting three gold medals, and Molly Botkin, Sherman Oaks Swim School, splashes to new records for her coach Tony Dendeneau and her school, again one of the standouts of the wholesale record-breaking two-day attack conducted by swimmers in all age groups up to 16. A total of 22 records, many of them national, were smashed in three days of individual brilliance by the Southland's best." See images 00159228 through 00159232 for all photos in this series.
