Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 20, 1957 reads "S/Sgt. David Bullard of North Hollywood Marine Corps Recruiting office accepts 'Toys for Tots' from North Hollywood Brownies. Aiding annual Marine Corps drive are from left, Melissa Carrau, Marilyn Bewsher and Andrea Albro. Leaders of new troop are Mmes. Lee Carrau, Robert Clark and Lawrence Young."
