Description
Photograph of three young Walapai Indian women water carriers, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. They walk, on behind the other, to the right in front of two Indian blankets hung on a wooden wall -- one blanket with stripes, the other with a diamond and stripe pattern -- each woman with a pottery water jug hung from a strap around her forehead to her back. The first and tallest is wearing a long plaid dress under a patterned shawl or blanket around her shoulders. Se wears a light scarf around her dark hair with cropped bangs. She is barefoot. The second, slightly shorter than the first, is wearing a checkered dress with similarly cut hair hanging free. The third, the shortest, is wearing a light plaid dress. All are barefoot. A window (at left) is in the wall. A chair or table nearby holds a small pile of racks or frames(?).
