Description
Annotation translation: "The drinking house in the chief's compound in Bali. A beautiful house of this kind stands in every big chief's compound. The chief and the notable men of the town meet there to arbitrate when their subordinates have disputes and in general to discuss the welfare and problems of the community. The figures are carved, and often painted. They symbolise important persons or events [in the history] of the town." Annotation: "Das Trinkhaus im Häuptlingsgehöft i. Bali. Note translation: To judge by their style the carved posts are from Bamileke. (PV 03.2002). Stamped: "Museum der Basler Mission, Basel, Missionsstrasse 21."
