Description
Shown here, in circa 1950, is the business office of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) at 2101 K Street. The power utility was created by the vote of Sacramento County residents on July 11, 1923. For the next two decades, however, it was embroiled in court disputes with Pacific Gas and Electric over jurisdiction. With the California State Supreme Court finally siding with SMUD in March 1946, the utility was able to start operations in earnest in April of the same year, providing service to 65,000 Sacramento County residents.
