Survival school students (L-R), Joel Turner, Marilyn Chandler, Jack Madeley, Allen Mons, Brian Schwarz, and Ron Venn float on an inflatable raft. They keep a low profile by laying flat on their stomachs. Each person carries either a rifle or wooden paddle as they attempt a beachhead assault. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
