Description
"In 1944, Elizabeth Taylor was trained by Egon Merz at his Escondido Beach Ranch called 'Rancho Sea Air,' which he bought in 1941. His ranch was just east of Paradise Cove [Malibu]. Egon trained Elizabeth, Mickey Rooney, and Pie [the horse] in the movie 'National Velvet' in horse jumping events. Egon was a native of Leipzig, Germany. His father trained hundreds of riders before WWI. MGM gave the horse to her after this movie. It was brought to live at Merz's ranch for training. Merz married Antonia Vidor, daughter of 'War and Peace' director King Vidor. Elizabeth was about 16 years old when this movie was made. Egon was born in 1906 and died in 1994. Egon's father won over 300 silver medals for his riding and training horses." [Editor's Note: The actual name of the horse that played The Pie was King Charles]. complete;
