Description
Two women and a man model their Philadelphian fashions for November of 1841. The man, seated in a chair carved with classical volutes, wears long strapped trousers, a white pleated shirt, a white waistcoat, and a black frock coat with notched lapels. He wears a gray cravat, black shoes, white gloves, and carries a walking stick. His hair is styled with side curls and a center part and he has long sideburns and chin whiskers. His top hat rests upside-down on a small table covered with a white tablecloth. Leaning against the top hat is a copy of Graham's Magazine for November, 1841. He gazes at the young woman in the center who sits on an ottoman in front of an elaborately gold framed mirror. She wears an off-the-shoulder evening gown with a pleated bodice and zigzag hemmed sleeves. The neckline, sleeves, and hem are trimmed with fur or velvet, with three bands of increasing sizes at the hem. Her hair is parted in the middle and she wears a cap with lappets trimmed with fringe and bands of pink. She carries a closed fan in her hand. Her short gloves has ruffles at the hems. The woman on the right wears a bright turquoise blue gown with long sleeves. It has a pleated bodice and is belted at the waist with a gold buckle. The v neckline is trimmed with white lace and she wears a cameo brooch at the center. The sleeves have a dropped shoulder, and are full at the elbow, and tapered tightly at the wrist. There are tucks and white ruffles at the elbow. The full skirt has a zigzag decoration down the left side, off center. This is a band of white lace ruffles and tucked fabric, similar to that of the sleeves, running from waist to hemline. She wears pale blue gloves and a black poke-bonnet trimmed with a bow at the back and a feather plume. In the background the parlor has swags of fabric framing the mirror, a square column, and a flower pot of roses seen through a window of grillwork.
