This is the famous "Yankee Doodle" monoplane, federal registration number X4769, seen at Union Airport (Bob Hope Airport) in Burbank. The Yankee Doodle was the first Lockheed Vega built that had a Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine with 450 horsepower. This powerful engine helped her earn both the west-east and east-west speed records with Art Goebel as pilot. This photograph was taken just a few months before her fateful crash 30 miles southeast of Prescott on the night of November 3, 1928. Both the owner of the aircraft, Harry Tucker, and his pilot Captain C.B.D. Collyer were killed in the crash. Photo dated: August 18, 1928.
