Description
This circa-1955 photograph shows Folsom Dam's down-lake spillway, leading into the lower American River. The spillway was completed in May 1956, with the first bucket of concrete being poured on Oct. 29, 1952. When finished, the dam covered some 355,000 acre-feet, and became a major factor in flood abatement, holding back the some 2.6 million acre-feet of water that had inundated sections of the Sacramento Valley for millennia.
