Description
"Three Teachers and three of the oldest scholars of the Girl's school Faravohitra 1875" including "Rasoanaly, Razafimanga, Raketaka, Ravelo, Ramanandraibe, Rafara" Six Malagasy women wearing Western dresses with lambas, holding flowers and books, possibly Bibles. This album came to the LMS collection via Robert Griffith, a missionary for the LMS in Madagascar between 1899 and 1914. The photographs date from circa 1868 to 1885, and comprise photographs taken by a missionary and also commercially distributed prints purchased by the creator of the album. As well as covering people and places relating to the LMS's work in Madagascar, some photographs relate to Italy, Egypt and Mauritius, suggesting that they were taken or purchased on the journey to or from Madagascar, or on leave to Mauritius. James Cross Thorne was in Mauritius in 1883.
