Photograph of a marine firing an Italian trench mortar at the World War I Allied War Exposition in Los Angeles, August 1918. A uniform-clad marine crouches on the grass beside a complex piece of weaponry bearing the number 49. The marine can be seen grasping a lever with his right hand while cranking a spring with his left hand. The spring is attatched to a small tube supporting a large spherical object with fins.
