K Street, between 7th and 14th streets was converted into a pedestrian mall. “This section included two of the city’s finest old buildings, Weinstock’s Department Store and the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.” In December of 1969, The K Street Mall was formally designated Downtown Plaza and turned into a pedestrian mall decorated with fountains, waterways, and concrete sculptures.
