Description
This 1960 photograph shows a repurposed Eureka Engine Company Number Four Firehouse at 1017 Fifth St. The original structure, which was built in 1855, later became the home of the Happy Time Cafe. The restaurant was operated by Peter Carli, an Italian immigrant who, after a long stint as a Marysville rancher, turned to being a restaurateur. He went on to be part of a group of local businessmen who sought to bring the Bank of America -- originally the Bank of Italy -- to Sacramento in 1921. He died in 1966. To the right of the Happy Time is the Ock Lee Laundry at 1021 Fifth St. To the left is the faded signage of the Inland Press at 508 through 510 Merchant St.
