Photograph article dated February 12, 1962 partially reads, "They're going to be panning for gold in Rosamond March 3 and 4. It's all for the 2nd annual World's Championship Gold Panning Contest at Tropico Gold Camp, in northern Antelope Valley. This is how it will work: A certain number of gold nuggets will be placed in a measured amount of gravel. The timers set their watches. Who will be the first to get rid of the gravel leaving only gold behind?... The event is held to help celebrate the discovery of gold near Newhall in March, 1842. Co-sponsors of the event are the Rosamond Chamber of Commerce and Kern-Antelope Historical Society." Photograph caption reads, "Degan pans; Shirley watches. She's Miss Rosamond; he's last year's winner."
