Description
The salon-like showroom of Lavenson’s Shoes at 1018-1020 K Street is shown in this June 17, 1939 photograph. The store was founded in 1877 by Gus Lavenson. By 1942 it was recognized as the oldest firm of its kind on the west coast under the same family ownership, having celebrated its 65th Anniversary just a few years after this photograph was taken. Over that period, it was estimated that Lavenson’s sold an astonishing 4,000,000 pairs of shoes. A tradition at Lavenson’s, started in 1882, was to give customers their first pair of baby shoes. The business was born on Fifth and J Streets, having moved to the pictured location in 1927.
