The use of steroids among athletes was a concern during the International Gymnastic Championship, held at UCLA, after 15 American athletes were expelled from the ninth Pan American Games, held in Caracas, Venezuela from August 14 to August 29, 1983. Photograph caption dated August 26, 1983 reads, "A sign points out the way to the doping control center (at UCLA) where athletes are examined during the competition."
