Description
Clair Engle was a Democratic member of the California Senate elected in 1936, and a member of the United States House of Representatives, from California's 2nd district, from 1943-1959. He worked to expand the California Central Valley Project and served on several committees while Congressman and Senator. Engle authored or co-authored 104 bills that were signed into law. This audio recording may be a speech or statement about, or given to, the Californian Republican Party. It was recorded 3 months before he underwent surgery to remove a fatal brain tumor. There was a scrap of paper found in the cassette box, with a handwritten note: "Engle, Simulcast. 5-17-63 Nixon Leaves Calif." There is a transcript, and a phonorecord attached with the corresponding date and title listed on this note, in box 189, folder 8 of the Engle collection. This date does not correspond with the date written on the 1/4 inch tape box. This audio tape may be a copy of the phonorecord- or may have been made in preparation for the remarks on the phonorecord. California Audiovisual Preservation Project
