Description
Annotation on reverse of a similar image: "One of the original "Views of New Almaden" (Calif) introduced by Supt. Hennen Jennings at contested election trial, Sullivan vs. Felton, 1887. During the trial the contested claimed that the employees of Quicksilver Mining Corporation were little more than serfs and that living and working conditions were poor. In refuting this charge Hennen Jenninge, the superintendent of the mines, introduced 53 pictures of New Almaden. These photographs were taken over a period of years by Dr. S. E. Winn and Robert R. Bulmore". Photo depicts a worker standing by a scale surrounded by mercury flasks.
