Description
Photograph shows the exterior of the Bickur Cholim Temple in San Jose. The sign above the door reads "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people." "Originally called the San Jose Bickur Cholim Society (visiting the sick), Temple Emanu-El was established in 1861." The first building, dedicated in 1870, was located at the corner Third and San Antonio Streets. This temple was destroyed by fire in 1940. The current temple, called Temple Emanu-El, is located at 1010 University Avenue in San Jose.
