Description
Though Hose and Ladder Company No. 3 once lived in the building that bears its name and now houses the Firehouse Restaurant, from 1872 until 1922, it housed Engine Company No. 1, known as “Confidence.” The first paid fire department in Sacramento was created by an act of the Sacramento City Council to replace the volunteer fire department that preceded it. The change also came with a transition from hand engines to Amoskeag steam powered fire engines. Engine Company No. 1 had nine permanent members at the time of its creation. This photo dates to the early 1870s.
