Charles Handy article on the Third Age and the meaning and evolving nature of retirement. Handy locates the Third Age in a series of four Ages that correlate with different life stages. However, he also notes that the age boundaries of such stages are constantly changing. Handy then describes how different kinds of work are involved in the Third Age apart from full-time employment, namely, self-employment, part-time workers, temporary helpers, and paraprofessionals in different labor sectors. He proceeds to discuss how work for nothing or expenses only, study work, home-work, and caring work will all be alternatives in the Third Age, and that there are varying income requirements for individuals entering the Third Age, which ultimately requires an unconditional Basic Income scheme. Ultimately, Handy urges that the Third Age should be placed on the social agenda so that more people can plan for it and enjoy it.
