Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Stawry Kary’s uncle left Palestine for Los Angeles in 1955. The rest of the family – Stawry, his parents, and three sisters – followed in 1972. They came directly to Southern California from Jordan to escape the wars and seek a better life. Stawry was 16 years old and in 10th grade at the time. The family lived in Inglewood, Redondo Beach, and Lawndale, where Stawry graduated from high school. He married in 1988 and had three children. Stawry Kary dances with a belly dancer next to his wife, Hanan Zabaneh Kary, and her bridesmaids at their wedding reception in Culver City in 1988.
