Description
Photograph of a panoramic view of downtown Los Angeles from First Street looking north, ca.1891-1898. The photograph appears to be taken from a 3rd-floor window or the roof of the Hotel Nadeau, at a point on 1st Street mid-block between Broadway & Spring Street. The Second Court House with clock tower is located on Pound Cake Hill (former site of the high school) in the center background. Most of the buildings are two- or three-story brick structures. Mostly roofs are visible. Legible signs include: "Henry J.A. Stuhr, OK Rosedale Whiskies, native wines & brandies", "Waverly [...], best to buy", "Larronde Block", and "Los Angeles ABC Tract Co.". The photograph features the following buildings: Second Court House (1891-1935)
Henry J.A. Stuhr Whiskey & Wines store, at the left, on 1st Street between Broadway and Spring Street
Phillips Block (1887-1912), a large white building in the middle right, located on north-west corner of Spring and Franklin Streets
Title Insurance and Trust Company Building, nearest (leftmost) of two three-story brick structures below Court House, located on New High and Franklin Streets
Fulton Block, to the right of the Title Insurance building, on New High Street
Women's Christian Temperance Union Building (built in 1889) can be seen through trees to the left of the Title Insurance building, on the north-west corner of Temple Street and Broadway
Larronde Block (1883-1932) is clearly visible in the foreground, at right, at the north-west corner Spring and 1st Streets.
