Connie and Cynthia begin the interview discussing the context of the novel, and Connie has Cynthia read a passage from the book. They proceed to talk about the perils of being a black woman in Texas during the early 1960s and how the main character, Ruby, must adjust to the environment upon her return after living in New York. Connie and Cynthia go on to talk about issues in the novel, such as child-trafficking and prostitution, that afflict some of the characters in the narrative. They then consider the issue of passing and the importance of skin color in the book, and how the story is based in fact on the author’s kin’s experiences, as well as her own. Connie and Cynthia proceed to discuss homosexuality in the novel and the way in which Ruby uses her sexuality to protect herself and others, and the way sexuality weaves into the lives of other characters in the book. Cynthia talks about how the book is a part of a trilogy, and Connie closes the interview requesting an autograph for her copy of the book.
