Photograph caption dated August 28, 1930 reads, "Col. H. B. Hersey, United States meteorologist in Los Angeles shows a bit of timber from the balloon house whence Salomon Andree sailed for the North Pole in a balloon 33 years ago. On the board is painted a Swedish flag. Col. Hersey found the wrecked balloon house on Dane's island in 1906."
