Photograph shows Saint Joseph's Church (now designated a basilica and cathedral), located at 80 South Market Street in San Jose. Blurred images of cars and pedestrians cross the street in front of the church. "The story of Saint Joseph Church began in 1777 when Mission Santa Clara was founded and the adjacent Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe became the first civil settlement in Alta California. A small adobe church was established in the village and dedicated to Saint Joseph in 1803, making it the first parish in the state of California." The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph of today is the fifth church dedicated to Saint Joseph and the fourth to occupy the present site. Its cornerstone was laid on March 19, 1876 (St. Joseph's Day) and it was dedicated on April 22, 1877. In 1985 the Vatican approved Saint Joseph as a cathedral of the diocese of San Jose. In 1997 the Vatican conferred Basilica status on the cathedral.
