"Die Kranken warten auf Behandlung, meist werden Zähne gezogen." ("Sick persons waiting for treatment, mostly teeth are pulled out"). An African health assistant is pulling a tooth. Next to him: another health assistant sitting on a chair. In the background: a table full of phials and medical objects. A group of people is watching the scene. Elise Schärf (1892-?) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. She was a deaconess and received training not only as a nurse but also in the care of mothers and lepers. She served from 1928 for many years at the leprosy hospital in Isoko.
