Born in Santa Monica, Gifford played tailback for Jess Hill at USC before embarking on his Hall of Fame NFL career. In the fictional memoir "A Fan's Notes," writer Frederic Exley described Gifford's collegiate career this way: "Frank Gifford was an All-America at USC, and I know of no way of describing this phenomenon short of equating it with being the Pope in the Vatican."
