This dwelling, built in 1849 by Don Vicente De La Osa, was a favored stopping place for the numerous travelers on El Camino Real. It stands on land that is a part of the one-square-league Rancho El Encino granted in 1845 by Governor Pio Pico to three Indians, Ramon, Francisco, and Roque, whose interests were purchased by Don Vicente. Originally the land was under the jurisdiction of Mission San Fernando Rey founded in 1797.
First photograph caption dated June 1, 1957 reads "Tree-shaded historic site. This is entrance to Los Encinos State Historical Monument at 16756 Moorpark St., Encino. Site of 5.6 acres once was used as cattle grazing land by San Fernando Mission. Plans are under way to restore buildings to original condition. Monument is favorite stopping place for history lovers. Site is close to modern, busy business area."; Second photograph caption dated August 13, 1958 reads "Fiesta de Encino site. Los Encinos State Historical Monument, Moorpark and La Maida streets, will be scene of festivities during first annual Fiesta De Encino Week to begin Monday. Week will commemorate arrival of Don Gaspar De Portola expedition which traveled through Valley in August, 1765, en route to Monterey."; Third photograph caption dated August 5, 1960 reads "Monument marks first campsite of White men in Valley.
