Description
The Valley to Vietnam series, produced by Sacramento Public Library, traces the arc of experience of Vietnam era veterans living in the Sacramento, California area. Bill McPoil enjoyed an upbringing in Sacramento that included life in Tahoe Park and walking the halls of McClatchy High School. With the capture of the U.S.S. Pueblo in January 1968, McPoil volunteered for the U.S. Marines. As a radio operator, he spent time in I Corps, at Danang, Vandegrift Combat Base, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Amtrac Battalion, and 3d Reconnaissance Battalion. A return home saw McPoil wrap up service in the Marine Corps, attend Sacramento State, and do much from police work to labor relations to teaching. He is now a writer, focusing on the history of Sacramento baseball and the growth of the Free Speech Movement in the Bay Area during the 1960s. Note: This is an audio-only interview.
