Photograph caption dated October 26, 1957 reads, "Newhall strikes it rich - Small community of Newhall has right to be proud. It is located near site of first commercial oil rig in California, shown above, and is also within five minutes' drive of place where gold was first discovered in California. Four years before gold was found at Sutter's Mill, gold nuggets were found wrapped in roots of historic oak tree in Placerita Canyon. Above is oil field which grew from first discovery in Placerita Canyon near Highway 6, connecting artery for San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.
