In PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM: **F869 B15 B36, pg. 13. In: Bakersfield : photograph album. View 1 (2009-0079a). Shows brush-covered hillside, rocks, wooden trestle and flume in center -- view 2 (2009-0079b). Rocky hillside, four men excavating a channel -- view 3 (2009-0079c). Wooden trestle crossing small ravine, tree-covered hill in background -- view 4 (2009-0079d). Two small boys with fishing poles. Two tents and camp chair beside them -- view 5 (2009-0079e). Construction site with men standing atop wooden flume. Wheelbarrows, shovels, box of sand, cement or dirt, and barrel scattered around site -- view 6 (2009-0079f). Same view of construction site, men have been joined by two ladies -- view 7 (2009-0079g). Shows channel being dug in hillside. Men, tools, cannisters, wooden framework, rocks line the channel. In and around Kern County numerous canals built over years to move water from Kern River for irrigation. In 1904, Kern River Power Company completed 12 mile flume and canal from Kernsville to Los Angeles. As part of last minute lawsuit, canal was completely cemented to prevent seepage. Possibly these pictures show construction of that canal.
