Description
Photograph of the old mill of the Mission San Gabriel, El Molino Viejo, ca.1887, when it was first converted into a residence, 1120 Old Mill Road, San Marino, showing the balcony and front door. Originally built as a mill for Mission San Gabriel, it was converted into a home by 1850 by Colonel and Mrs. Edward Kewen who lived there for the following 21 years. They dispensed, it was said, "the most lavish hospitality San Gabriel Valley has ever known." To the far left are the two archways that led to the wheel chamber during the time the building served as a grist mill. At the right is one of the huge stone buttresses that support the structure at three corners. Later operated by the California Historical Society. A woman peers out of a second story window. A sign on the tree at right reads: "All persons are strictly forbidden from [...]ing pictures"[?].
