Description
This circa 1916 postcard shows the automobile camping grounds in McKinley Park. The camping grounds opened in 1916 to accommodate the heavy flow of tourists drawn to the California State Fair, located on Stockton Boulevard. The camping grounds were free of charge for tourists until May 11, 1922 when the Sacramento City Council passed an ordinance establishing a small fee. The grounds were known to be overcrowded during the annual State Fair. On September 6, 1922, the Sacramento Bee published an article describing a day in which more than 3,000 persons and 500 cars occupied the grounds.
