Description
Nancy Shaw, psychotherapist, talks in Berkeley about conversion therapy, or the controversial method of attempting to change a person's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual. Shaw was also an activist in the 1970s and was the first female professor at UC Santa Cruz where she was initially denied tenure by Chancellor Robert Sinsheimer, despite being highly recommended for promotion. She would be involved in a long legal battle around this until being reinstated in her position in 1987.
Notes on original container: RFL 7 12 mono Behav. Mod. Nancy Shaw Paper inside film container: Tonite's show is on BEH. MOD. About a year ago the prison authorities attempted to institute a program in which inmates were in isolation from the other prisoners, various forms of BEH MOD were used, such this program was curtailed because of inmate resistance and outside support. We started working on this show in December when a special unit was being set up at the Calif. Institute for Women to treat the women who violated prison rules. At the present time the prison authorities have set up a separate unit and have assigned certain women to it. Although the authorities are refusing to name the program that will be used on the women as BEH MOD., it is likely that they will implement tactics similar to the ones used a year ago. The discussion will reveal how BEH MOD. isn't only intended for prisoners. Our discussion is with Nancy Shaw who is a psychology professor.
