The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS), a conservative, Confessional Lutheran denomination with German immigrant roots, was founded in 1847 in Missouri. The LCMS is now the eighth largest Protestant denomination in the United States, and the second-largest Lutheran body in the U.S. after the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
