Description
On back of photograph: "Horace M Dobbins in his Olsdmobile [sic] on Pasadena Cycleway - about 1902 = 4"; used "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942" by Beverly Rae Kimes and Henry Austin Clark, Jr.(1996) to verify this is an Oldsmobile, but model was not found; vehicle in photo closely resembles steam Locomobile from 1900-1904. Horace Dobbins was born in Philadelphia in 1868 and moved to Pasadena 1887, one year after the city was incorporated. In 1898 he was elected to the board of Trustees, serving as president of the board (Mayor of Pasadena), from 1900 to 1901. Dobbins envisioned a Pasadena to Los Angeles elevated bike trail, the “California Cycleway,” which was started but never completed. Dobbins also headed the Pasadena Hospital Association, was an early president of the Valley Hunt Club, held positions on the city’s Board of Health and Library board, and was a former president of the Sixth Agricultural District, which developed Exposition Park in Los Angeles. Horace Dobbins died in 1962 at the age of 94 (H.M. Dobbins, early monorail backer dies, 1962).
