Description
Four adolescents and four children display their elegant French fashions for 1834. The first boy, who leans back against a neoclassical pedestal, wears white lace-trimmed pantalettes and a white blouse with a short ruffled collar. Over these, he wears a tightly fitted salmon-colored jacket with three-quarter sleeves and a stiff skirt of heavy material. Both garments are decorated with horizontal bars resembling military dress. He wears green boots that button up the sides and a straw hat decorated with a white feather. He takes some berries from the next boy who wears a white pleated blouse with a short notched collar and white pantalettes. Over these, he wears a tight-fitting, tunic dress in powder blue with dark blue trim. The trim, which has a diamond motif, runs along the lapels, the hems of the sleeves, and across the front. The smaller child next in line wears a pale yellow outfit with heavy applique. Over his lace-trimmed pantalettes is a vest with front buttons and zigzag trim, a jacket with a peplum which fits snugly at the waist, a skirt with two lappet panels on the front, and a short cape. This outfit has ruching trim on the edges and in zigzags, with small flowers. He holds the hand of an older girl who wears white, lace-trimmed pantalettes and a white lace blouse with three-quarter hanging sleeves. Over this she wears a powder blue dress with a pleated wide v neckline and short, double-layered puffed sleeves. The dress fits tightly at the waist and the skirt has triple tiers scalloped at the hems. She wears a wide-brimmed straw hat decorated with ribbon bows and a large white feather, green and black button boots, and a bracelet on each wrist. Her left arm is being held by another girl who wears a triple-layered brown and blue bias plaid skirt over her pantalettes. Her bodice is white with double rows of ruched trim on the lapels, the peplum, and the three-quarter sleeves. More ruching is banded horizontally across the center front. She wears a black ribbon choker, yellow gloves, a black bracelet, short black boots, and her hair is dressed into a French braid. Next to her is a young girl who wears a short pink satin dress with a white blouse and lace-trimmed pantalettes. The bodice of the outfit has ruched bands that edge the peplum, large pink bows at the shoulders, and a small pink bow at the waist. The white blouse has narrow rows of ruching on the bodice and short sleeves and scalloped trim. Her skirt has horizontal bands of multiple tucking. She wears short gray button boots. Behind her is an adolescent boy who wears long gray trousers with strips down the leg, a tight-fitting white waistcoat and collar, and a short black long-sleeved jacket, with black on black decoration. The girl on the far right wears a turquoise blue satin dress over her lace-trimmed pantalettes and a white full-sleeved blouse, of which we only see one cuff. She faces away, showing the back view of her shawl or mantelet. It is white and semi-transparent, with an embroidered, scalloped edge and rick rack trimming around the hem. It has a hood or collars with a wide white ribbon bow. She wears turquoise short boots and a shallow-brimmed bonnet trimmed with red flowers and greenery. The group of children stand out of doors with a white neoclassical balustrade, pedestals and columns, and with trees and a landscape in the distance.
