Description
Mount Tamalpais in background. Lovell Avenue in center. Roof of Old Mill School with unpaved playground left center. Article from San Francisco Business, 5/18/1923, accompanies the photograph and reads: "Mount Tamalpais derives its name from the Indians of this region who belonged to the Hoo-ko-e-ko tribe. They called their country Tamal and their name for mountain is pi-is. Their name for this mountain translated means mountain of their country. Indians did not live on the mountain but they maintained villages on several sides." According to note attached to the photograph, Hoo-koo-e-ko is a name made up by Dan Totheroh (see his oral history for confirmation). A handwritten note "see Calif Out of Doors" is written on the caption under the photograph. Attached to the back of the photograph are several short articles from newspapers and magazines about Mt. Tamalpais, at least two of which are from the Mill Valley record in 1930.
