Description
Ruben F. McClellan, left, and Alfred F. Moore at groundbreaking for a solar observatory on Table Mountain near Big Pines Recreation Camp in 1925. Table mountain is located near the town of Wrightwood in the Angeles National Forest. McClellan, Chariman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors from 1917-1928, was instrumental in the development of Big Pines Recreation Camp. Moore was from the Smithsonian Institution which established the observatory in 1926. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory acquired the United Stated Forest Service lease permit for the site in 1962 and built a new facility.
