Moonstone Beach was a spot in Redondo Beach where large quantities of moonstones would be deposited. The area became popular with tourists around the turn of the 19th century, but over-harvesting eventually depleted the area of its namesake natural resource. The Mabel Grey, a three-masted lumber schooner, is pictured after going aground on Moonstone Beach (between Wharf Number 1 and Hermosa) in the early hours of March 11, 1904. A curious onlookers are gathered nearby. Articles in the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Herald claimed the crew was in danger, but did not report on their ultimate fate
