Photograph caption dated October 13, 1964 reads, "One of the biggest air transportation bargains anywhere is the $72 fare for the 3,000-mile flight from Moscow to Irkutsk or Chita. By way of contrast, I paid $52 for the one-hour, 300-mile trip from Irkutsk to Ulan Bator, Mongolia. The same two-engine jet Tupolev plane took me both places. Khrushchev has encouraged travel to Siberia by making the fares low, wages higher and promotion of the area seductive, constantly stressing the 'untold riches in the virgin lands to the East.' I made the trip at night going and in the daytime returning. Both times the plane was filled to capacity. The reaction of the passengers on the night flight as they peered out the windows was fascinating. They appeared bewitched." Photograph caption reads, "Quizzing kids - Conover interviewed these Siberian teenagers on the road between Irkutsk and Chita. He found that everyone was a Beatles' fan. While they were curious about America, they were proud of their country's accomplishments." Austin Conover, Hollywood Citizen-News columnist wrote a series of stories on his travel experiences, which were carried in the Valley Times as well as the Hollywood Citizen-News.
