Description
Text: This Buddha image built within a Bodhi-Tree shrine is supposed to be the most exquisite Buddha image found in Sri Lanka. It is sculptured in the Gupta-style and belongs to the period between 5-6 centuries A. D. Probably this image may have been gilt and studded with jewels. The image is in Samādhi posture and seated in Virāsena. There is evidence to the effect that this Bodhi-Tree shrine had four Buddha images on the four sides. The square pit where the Bodhi-tree was planted has also been discovered. The original Bodhi-Tree is not been [sic] in existence now. This Bodhi-Tree shrine is one of the four ancient Bodhi-Tree shrines in Abhayagiriya. Height: 5 feet 9 inches. Earlier there would have been four statues at this location, which is between the Abhayagiri stupa and twin ponds.
