Large stone water cistern was made with great care. It has a scalloped edge at top and pillars in bas-relief on its sides. Located at the base of the stairs on the eastern side, the water stored in the cistern may have served devotees, who were required to wash their feet before entering the stūpa premises. Such receptacles (and often much smaller ones) are found at entrances to ancient shrines.
