A longleaf pine seedling about 5 feet high, originating from the 1920 seed crop. The seedling is high enough out of the grass to reduce the possibility of its foliage from becoming infected with the leaf spot disease. The ground has not been burned for a long time. Several seedlings pointed to by Prof. H. H. Chapman at the left, are still so low as to get competition with grass. It is possible, according to Prof. Chapman, that a fire, after seedlings are established, may be beneficial in removing the grass crop and giving the seedling a chance to produce foliage away from shade and competition of the grass. E. F. April, 1929
