Description
On back: "Hose Wagon-Bill Tennant, ----, Chas. Plummer, John McGrath, Engine --- ----, A. Damonte, Mike Higgins" This image was featured on a series of collectible cards produced by The Image Group in 1992 with the following caption: The Steam Pumper and its crew is an interesting period in history overlooked by many. Crews were mostly volunteers, more social clubs than anything else. The pumper would drop its hoses either into a manhole where water ran freely, or a prepared fire reservoir. The pumper crew then worked its hydraulic pumper and the water was aimed by the hose handlers. Sometimes, the fire was extinguished, to the surprise of the observers. The steam pumper in this photograph had served as Engine #1 for San Francisco. San Jose paid San Francisco $1,800 for the pumper and another $756 for hoses and other equipment.
