Description
This circa 1965 postcard shows the long-standing Sacramento restaurant which opened in 1917 under the management of Italians Ciro Ferrara and his son in law Onofrio Barbaria who believed that Mexican tamales were too spicy for the average customer. In addition to the tamales advertised as its specialty, they served hot sandwiches and Italian and Spanish dishes. By 1931, it belonged to Antonina Barbaria who disavowed association with any other tamale café, most likely a reference to the De Luxe Tamale Parlor, a restaurant which also served Italian and Spanish cuisine located two blocks away and owned by Salvatore Barbaria. In the 1950s, their menu included items such as enchiladas containing spaghetti or ravioli. Capitol Tamale Café operated under the ownership of the Barbaria family before permanently closing after sustaining damage during an intentionally set fire in December of 1984.
